Abbot Kinney Blvd

Abbot Kinney Blvd（アボキニー通り）はヴェニス・ビーチから２ブロックくらい内陸に入ったところにある、“裏ヴェニス”的位置づけにある通りだ。元々先輩より、「面白い通りがLAにある」ということで教えて頂いた。
事実、面白い。車社会ゆえの都市設計下では「歩ける街並み」が生まれるには日本よりも難しいバランスが必要とされると思うけれど、このAbbot Kinney通りはセンスの良い店が「ヒト向きの距離感で」軒を連ねている。独創的な建築も多く、ふとした路地にも情緒が感じられる。アメリカにも“情緒”や“趣”はもちろん適応されるのだ。
人々がinteractionする場所としての街路の話はまた改めてしたいと思う。
One of my Japanese friends told me the story of Abbot Kinney Blvd which is going to be a new cultural mecca in Venice Beach, LA. I thought that every American, expecially in California, city was designed for cars, so it’s hard to find out streets with a nice sidewalk and shops. That was of course wrong. Abbot Kinney Blvd corrected my misunderstanding.
Face-to-face interactions are essential in terms of creating new idea, fashion, and culture no matter how impact they have, and I think “cool” open streets with a sidewalk, not huge closed shopping malls, would help it. Since I have strong interest in current and future culture in CA, I want to find more cases like Abbot Kinney.
